Expected Results

2021 Goals

  • Organizing 4 community-based workshops that will be designed in a coherent fashion.
  • Facilitating 4 seminars concerning consciousness, intellect, the jurisprudence of communities and youth empowerment.
  • Producing one documentary about the demographic changes of the East African community.
  • Preparing 3 focused studies regarding social issues such as opioid abuse, housing, and mental health.
  • Designing 3 televised or audiovisual programs to serve the center’s mission.
  • Arranging an annual conference to present and discuss research papers and study projects.

In the year 2021, we plan to conduct research around the effects of opioid overdose crisis and the social impact on the Somali and generally East African community in Minnesota. We want to find ways to educate the community on early and rapid drug addiction detection. We also want to equip members of the community with the necessary resources to respond to emergency overdose situations.

We believe that the overdose crisis has become a phenomenon to Somali youth in our communities and is a leading cause of deaths. According to Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), “In 2017, over 400 Minnesotans died of an opioid-involved death, and prescription opioids remain the leading cause of opioid-involved death.” There are cases that could have been prevented if the community was more aware, ready and able to respond immediately.

Opioid crisis has created emergency conditions for which many of our youth die, thus impacting the future generations to come.

Another area of research planned by Bayan Research Center is housing and homeless crisis within the East African community. We will work to identify the core factors that lead to homelessness and the lack of housing opportunities.

We strongly believe a research and studies about opioid overdose crisis and housing issues around the East African Community is necessary work as this community has been often overlooked by traditional researchers.
